There are many ranges and styles of table bases available, from traditional four-legged to single and twin pedestal bases all to suit lots of table top shaped and sizes. Many bases are available in a choice of heights with the most popular being Dining height around 730mm, Poseur height around 1050mm and Coffee height around 480mm.
The majority of table bases specified for hospitality environments are pedestal bases, for the following good reasons:
- Pedestal bases are available in a very wide range of styles, sizes, materials and finishes.
- Pedestal bases do not obstruct diners’ chairs in the way that conventional legs can.
- Pedestal bases are good value.
- Pedestal bases are more flexible, if tables are pushed together, for instance, diners can sit all around thecombined table – there are no legs in the way.
- Pedestal bases are easier to move around without damage. Dragging a 4-legged base can causedamage andeventually loss of the trailing leg. Pedestal bases consist of a base plate, a column and a ‘spider’ which is fixed to the underside of the table top.
PEDESTAL BASE SIZES
Pedestal base sizes must complimenttable tops and vitally be big enough to be stable. Larger and heavier tops require wider base plates. Rectangular or oval tops are often supplied with similar shape bases (some have twin pedestals). Note that some solid (round or square) base plates do not fit between the legs of some chairs, making them less easy to fully push the chairs in to the table.
PEDESTAL BASE FINISHES
Pedestal bases are mainly metal, and are either left natural (for aluminium, stainless and cast iron, for example) they can also be colourpowder coated. Many bases are powder-coated in black, simply because this is perceived to be a discreetsolution. The bases do not standout and interfere with the appeal of the chairs and table tops. Powder-coating creates a hard finish that is tougher than traditional paint. Chrome is also popular finish too, sometimes a matt chrome finish or a brushed stainless steel.
PEDESTAL BASES FOR OUTDOORS
Many pedestal bases are suitable for exterior use too.Aluminium, stainless steel of a good qualitycast iron can all be weather-resistant. Outdoor table bases shouldbe weighty to resist being blown over (Good quality European bases have a weight around 20kg)
WOODEN PEDESTAL BASES
Wooden table bases are available, usually with fairly basic design appropriate for traditional pub interiors, although more sophisticated, turned bases are also available.
Wobbly tables are caused by one or more of the following:
The top is not fixed properly to the base. The base is assembled incorrectly. The table base has some flex in it (some budget options do!)Your floor is uneven. Of these, the last is probably most widespread and can be solved byspecifying a base with adjustable feet.
FOUR-LEGGED TABLE BASES
The main advantages of four-legged tables are additional stability and that some are designed to stack. In the main Four-legged table bases are chosen for aesthetical reasons, i.e. traditional turned Farmhouse style or chunky wooden rustic legs etc.Four-legged tables tend to hinder access because the legs can get in theway so choosing an appropriate width dining chair is paramount.
